The Uganda Prisons Service has moved to calm rising tension over the health of detained opposition heavyweight Dr. Kizza Besigye, assuring the public that the veteran politician is receiving proper medical care and remains in stable condition.
Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Prisons spokesperson SCP Frank Baine dismissed circulating reports that Besigye’s health is in critical condition, insisting that the four-time presidential candidate is under standard medical supervision and is being treated according to required health procedures.
The reassurance comes amid growing anxiety from opposition figures and human rights activists following Besigye’s recent treason arrest. The longtime critic of President Yoweri Museveni was charged in late 2025 after protests rocked parts of the country. He was later denied bail and, on January 19, 2026, transferred overnight to a medical facility a move that triggered fresh alarm over his condition.
Besigye’s wife, Winnie Byanyima, had earlier raised international concern, warning that her husband’s health was deteriorating in detention.
However, Baine maintains that there is no cause for panic.
“Dr. Besigye is receiving medical attention as required, and his condition is stable,” Baine said.
Despite the official reassurance, public reaction has been filled with doubt. Social media users have pointed to past incidents including the death of MP Muhammad Ssegirinya after incarceration questioning the credibility of state assurances regarding detainees’ health.
The unfolding situation has reignited debate over the treatment of opposition figures in custody, with activists and political allies renewing calls for Besigye’s immediate release.
For now, the nation watches closely caught between official reassurance and public mistrust.
