“Don’t Wait For Five Years” – Museveni Calls for Recall of Underperforming MPs

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has proposed that voters should recall Members of Parliament who fail to deliver, instead of waiting until the end of their five-year term.

Speaking at a campaign rally in Butambala, Mpigi District, on Monday, the President told supporters that citizens have the power to act when their elected leaders disappoint them.

“I suggest that if an MP underperforms, we should initiate a recall process and gather signatures to remove them before the end of their term,” Museveni said.

The President, who is also the National Resistance Movement (NRM) presidential flag bearer for the 2026 general elections, further warned voters against electing inexperienced politicians, especially from the opposition. He accused some of them of prioritising confrontation over supporting government development programmes.

Museveni emphasised the need for accountability, saying leaders must be answerable to the people who elect them. His remarks drew excitement from supporters at the rally, many of whom welcomed the idea as a way of keeping MPs focused on service delivery.

The President’s comments have since sparked wider debate on political accountability and the role of voters in shaping leadership throughout an elected term, not only during election
