The International Criminal Court (ICC) says it is working closely with international partners to finally arrest fugitive LRA leader Joseph Kony and bring him to trial for atrocities in northern Uganda.
Leonie von Braun, an ICC trial lawyer handling the Kony case, reassured victims during a November 28 briefing.
“We are working with our partners to have him arrested and surrendered. The international community and victims of northern Uganda should not give up hope.”,Leonie Von confirmed.
Von Braun, however declined to name the countries or agencies involved, citing security concerns.
The announcement follows a historic ICC decision last month, confirming all 39 charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity against Kony in absentia the first time in Court history that such a step has been taken.
Von Braun further explained that Kony has eluded capture by moving through regions where governments are not signatories to the Rome Statute, making formal arrest operations difficult. The ICC has no military force of its own and relies entirely on partners for enforcement.
Kony is believed to be hiding in the remote forests of the Central African Republic, where limited state presence continues to hinder his capture.
