“It’s a Political Misfortune” : CMP’s Mubarak Munyagwa Rules Out Any Coalition With NUP

Hon. Mubarak Munyagwa, the President of the Common Man’s Party (CMP), has firmly dismissed any possibility of forming a political coalition with the National Unity Platform (NUP) led by Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu alias Bobi Wine , branding the party an “obscene group” and warning that aligning with it would be a grave political mistake.

Speaking during a recent interview on Alternative Digitalk YouTube channel , Munyagwa did not mince his words as he poured scorn on Uganda’s leading opposition party.

“Coalition with NUP is more of a misfortune than a blessing. I can’t be part of an obscene group,” Munyagwa stated.

The former Kawempe South MP, who previously belonged to the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), has in recent months intensified his criticism of NUP, especially since January 2026. Across several media appearances, Munyagwa has accused the party of lacking strategic depth and undermining efforts to build a broad and effective opposition front.

Munyagwa, who is also a declared 2026 presidential candidate, argues that opposition unity cannot be built on what he describes as political confusion and poor leadership choices. His remarks further expose growing cracks within Uganda’s opposition camp as the country still befitting with 2026 post elections fever

NUP, which commanded about 24% of the vote in previous elections, remains the dominant opposition force, while smaller parties like CMP continue to struggle for national traction. Political analysts warn that such public fallouts and hardline positions could weaken any coordinated challenge against the incumbent establishment.

With the post election season intensifies with the opposition circles, Munyagwa’s comments signal that opposition alliances may remain elusive, setting the stage for a fragmented political contest in 2030
