The former leader of opposition in parliament Mathias Mpuuga has announced he will seek re- election for Nyendo- Mukungwe Division parliamentary seat under the banner of Democratic Front Party ( DFF) in the upcoming 2026 general elections.
Democratic front party president made the announcement during a community engagement in Mukudde Village , Masaka City.

His recent silence on political matters had fueled speculations about his future , especially after he did not appear before the Electoral Commission in September for Presidential Candidate confirmation . Many Interpreted this as a sign he might be eyeing a high office in the country. However, addressing thousands of DFF supports and aspiring local government candidates on Monday , he clarified that his focus in on reclaiming his seat for Nyendo- Mukungwe Division.
He revealed that the party had asked him to continue representing the c Constituency for another five years as part of a broader strategy to strengthen it’s parliamentary presence.
“The party has directed me to return to Nyendo–Mukungwe and serve another five years as we prepare for the next move,” Mpuuga said.

He used the same chance to Address the concerns about the absence of campaign posters as he downplayed their significance.
“People have been asking why I haven’t put up posters, but posters are not the main thing the person is. If you don’t know Mpuuga or hear from him, you can’t feel his impact. Every area has its leader, and places without proper leadership tend to scatter in times of crisis. Masaka needs strong leadership to remain steady,” he added.
Mpuuga also used the opportunity to address the growing speculation about a potential presidential run, stating that while leadership is about readiness and purpose, now is not the time.
“During our national Democratic Front meeting, I was advised not to run this time because it might be a trap. Surprisingly, when I said I wouldn’t run, others began questioning why. But contesting is not an emotional actit’s strategic. When the time comes and I’m ready to lead nationally, you’ll know it. The dust will rise.”,he stated.
Mpuuga also to respond to accusations of corruption made during his time as Leader of the Opposition, calling the allegations politically driven.
“I’m not God, and I’m not an angel. But if you talk about serious people who act with principle, I’m one of them. Calling me corrupt because you fear me or have personal problems won’t change the truth.”,he said
Mpuuga also addressed claims that he misused Shs500 million:
“When they said I ‘ate’ Shs500 million, I asked how is that unusual? Every year I manage that much while serving Masaka. The Leader of the Opposition enjoys privileges similar to the Prime Minister’s, and even after leaving office, they continue to receive official respect. That’s why leaders like Ssekandi still receive government support.”,he clarified
Mpuuga urged Masaka residents to stay focused on electing leaders who can bring about real change.
“We still have a journey ahead. Let’s walk together without insults or divisions.”,he concluded.
