Museveni Backs Cardinal Wamala’s Legacy, Pledges State Support for Kamagwa Projects

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has reaffirmed government support for preserving and expanding the legacy of Cardinal Emmanuel Wamala, praising his lifelong contribution to faith, education and humanitarian service.

The President made the commitment during a meeting with the retired Archbishop of Kampala at State House Entebbe on Tuesday 17th February 2026 , where discussions focused on national values, community development and projects linked to the Cardinal Wamala’s family foundation.

According to Museveni, government backing will be extended to Kamagwa Hospital, a private medical facility founded under the Cardinal’s family initiative, as well as plans to establish and expand a legacy museum in Kamagwa village, Kyotera District.

“We agreed that the government will support his family foundation’s Kamagwa Hospital while it remains a private facility, and that the Ministry of Tourism will support the establishment of a museum to preserve his legacy,” Museveni wrote on X after the meeting.

Cardinal Wamala, now 99, was born in 1926 and served as Archbishop of Kampala until 2006. During the State House engagement, Museveni also accepted to act as patron of the Cardinal’s legacy projects, underscoring the importance of safeguarding the history and values of religious leaders who have shaped the nation.

Photos shared from the meeting showed warm and respectful exchanges, including a handshake between the President and the seated Cardinal, dressed in his traditional red vestments, in the presence of clergy and family members. The images reflected the deep respect accorded to religious leadership within Uganda’s Catholic community, which numbers over 13 million faithful.

The pledge has been widely welcomed as a strong signal of cooperation between the state and faith-based institutions, particularly in healthcare and cultural preservation. Observers say the move sets a positive example of nation-building, honouring service while investing in projects that continue to uplift communities across the country.
