Museveni Taps Former- BBC Star Allan Kasujja as New Media Centre Boss

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has directed the Minister of Information and Communication Technology and National Guidance, Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, to appoint seasoned journalist and former BBC broadcaster Allan Kasujja as the new Executive Director of the Media Centre.

In a letter addressed to the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the President revealed that he had received correspondence dated November 27, 2025, concerning developments at the Media Centre.

“I was not aware of the ongoing manoeuvres. However, some weeks ago, we discussed the idea of Allan Kasujja with you,” Museveni wrote in a letter dated December 27, 2025.

“I have already directed Dr. Chris Baryomunsi to appoint Allan Kasujja as Executive Director of the Media Centre. We can then look at the others.”

The President further instructed the ICT Minister to immediately begin the appointment process and also assess other candidates who could serve as Deputy Executive Director.

“By copy of this letter, I direct Dr. Chris Baryomunsi to initiate the procedures for appointing Allan Kasujja and, additionally, assessing others who could serve as Deputy,” Museveni added.

By press time, Dr. Baryomunsi was not available to comment.

Kasujja is set to replace long-serving government spokesperson Ofwono Opondo, who stepped down in April 2025 after declaring his intention to join elective politics ahead of the 2026 general elections. Opondo has since been elected unopposed as the Member of Parliament representing Older Persons for Eastern Uganda.

Allan Kasujja brings decades of experience in the media industry, both locally and internationally. He began his journalism career in the 1990s at Sanyu FM before working across radio and television platforms in Uganda.

He is widely remembered for co-hosting The Big Breakfast morning show on Capital FM (91.3) alongside Jackie Lumbasi and Ramesh Gabalsing, and for presenting Uganda’s version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, a role he has held since 2011.

In 2012, Kasujja relocated to London, where he became a familiar voice on the BBC World Service, regularly presenting Newsday and later hosting the Africa Daily podcast. He retired from the BBC in August 2025.

Kasujja also made history on January 15, 2016, when he co-moderated Uganda’s first-ever televised presidential debate alongside Kenyan journalist Nancy Kacungira.

His appointment signals a new chapter for the Media Centre, with expectations high that his global media experience will shape government communication in the years ahead.
