No Charges, No Answers: Police Detain NUP Mobilisation Chief Buwembo Habib

The Uganda Police Force has confirmed the arrest of National Unity Platform (NUP) head of mobilisation Buwembo Habib, alongside fellow party members Katabala Ronald and Nakakembo Josephine.

In a brief statement, police said the three are being held in custody pending court appearance. However, authorities did not disclose the charges leading to their arrest, raising fresh questions over the circumstances of their detention.

Reports indicate that the trio was picked up along Masaka Road, with earlier claims from NUP supporters suggesting they were forcefully taken by security operatives.

The arrests come amid a growing wave of detentions targeting opposition figures as Uganda heads toward the January 15, 2026 general elections.

International election observers have previously flagged rising cases of repression and intimidation against opposition actors during the pre-election period, adding to concerns over the political climate.

On social media platform X, public reactions have been swift, with many demanding transparency from security agencies over the motive behind the arrests. Supporters say the move appears aimed at disrupting NUP’s mobilisation drive ahead of the polls.

Buwembo Habib is no stranger to arrest, having reportedly been detained more than 100 times in connection with his political activism.
