Police in Mawogola have arrested several supporters of NUP candidate Gorreth Namugga following violent clashes with supporters of a rival NRM candidate during the ongoing 2026 election campaigns.
The incident happened last Wednesday after tensions flared between the two camps, leading to chaotic confrontations that left more than 10 people injured, according to police and eyewitnesses.
Reports indicate that the violence began when NRM supporters allegedly blocked a key road near the NUP rally venue and started pelting stones at Namugga’s supporters. The move reportedly disrupted the rally and triggered retaliatory attacks from the NUP side.
Eyewitnesses said that the situation quickly escalated as supporters from both camps engaged in physical fights, forcing police to intervene to restore order.
Police confirmed that several NUP supporters were arrested to help with investigations, adding that inquiries are still ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the violence.
Authorities have warned political supporters to avoid violence and allow campaigns to proceed peacefully as the election season gains momentum.
