Speaker Among Steps In to Support Late MP Nakimuli’s Family, Clears Child’s School Fees

Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among has announced that she will cover school fees for the child of the late Kalangala District Woman MP, Hon. Hellen Nakimuli, up to Senior Four at Bukedea Comprehensive School.

The decision follows a request communicated through Kibuli Secondary School, signaling urgent support for the bereaved family after Nakimuli’s sudden passing.

Nakimuli, 41, a National Unity Platform (NUP) legislator recently re-elected in 2026, died on April 19 after an unsuccessful surgical procedure. Her death has prompted an outpouring of tributes across the political divide, with Parliament organizing official honors and stepping in to assist with burial expenses.

Additional contributions have come from top leaders, including UGX 20 million from the President, and UGX 10 million each from the Speaker and the Buganda Caucus.

The Speaker’s gesture has largely been welcomed as a show of unity and compassion beyond party lines. However, some members of the public have raised concerns over the scope of the support, questioning why the sponsorship is capped at Senior Four and urging authorities to extend assistance through Senior Six.

Despite the mixed reactions, the move underscores growing calls for sustained institutional support for families of fallen public servants.
