The Speaker of Parliament, Anita Annet Among, has firmly dismissed speculation about her presidential ambitions, branding the claims as “rubbish” and reaffirming her loyalty to President Yoweri Museveni’s leadership and succession plans.

Speaking during the handover of a UGX 100 million contribution raised through the purchase of kits in support of Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba’s 52nd Birthday Run,Among announced that she will retire from elective politics in 2031. The charity event aims to raise funds for vulnerable children across Uganda.

Her remarks come amid persistent rumors surrounding her political future, as well as ongoing debates over controversial proposals to extend presidential and parliamentary terms from five to seven years.

A senior figure within the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), Among emphasized her commitment to supporting President Museveni’s endorsed successor, distancing herself from any suggestion of building a parallel power base.

The statement appears aimed at calming political tensions and addressing speculation in a country where Museveni has been in power since 1986 and succession planning remains a highly sensitive issue.
