STATE HOUSE DIASPORA UNIT BRINGS HOME FOUR UGANDANS STRANDED IN INDIA FOR OVER A DECADE

The State House Diaspora Unit has successfully facilitated the safe return of four Ugandan nationals who had been stranded in India for more than ten years, in a humanitarian operation aimed at restoring dignity and reuniting families.

On Wednesday evening, Deputy Head of the State House Diaspora Unit, Henry Wabyona, alongside Liaison Officer Topher Matsiko, received two women and two children upon their arrival back in Uganda.

The returnees are Fiona Namuddu, Rebecca Nakasaga, and two children aged eight and four years  both born in India and unable to access formal education due to their prolonged stay abroad.

India Amnesty Scheme Opened the Door
Their return was made possible through the Government of India’s Amnesty Scheme for foreign nationals who overstayed their visas. The programme allows affected individuals to exit India using an Expedited Exit Permit (EEP) without paying fines, running from September 1, 2025 to February 28, 2026.

Working closely with the Uganda High Commission in New Delhi, the State House Diaspora Unit secured travel documentation and facilitated air tickets to ensure the family’s safe journey home.

“This is a humanitarian intervention meant to restore dignity, reunite families, and offer our citizens a fresh start,” Mr Wabyona said, adding that government will work with relevant institutions to support the children’s reintegration and access to education.

The exercise highlights Uganda’s commitment to protecting its citizens abroad and reflects strong cooperation between Uganda and India in handling migration and consular challenges.

Ugandans facing distress overseas have been urged to contact their diplomatic missions or the State House Diaspora Unit for support.
