Uganda Football Mourns as Former Cranes Captain Polly Ouma Dies

The Ugandan football fraternity has been thrown into deep mourning following the death of former Uganda Cranes captain and Simba FC legend Polly Ouma.

The Former Footballers Initiative (FFI) has confirmed that the revered striker, coach, and administrator passed away on Tuesday morning, December 30, 2025, at Nsambya Hospital.

Polly Ouma remains one of the most respected figures in the history of Ugandan football. He captained the Uganda Cranes from 1972 to 1974, steering the national team through a defining period. Ouma also represented the country at three Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments, earning his place among Uganda’s greatest football icons.

Even after retiring from active football, Ouma never walked away from the game he loved. He later served as Uganda Cranes head coach between 1989 and 1995, where he played a crucial role in shaping and mentoring a new generation of players.

Fondly remembered as the “Field General” of the Golden Generation, Ouma’s leadership left an indelible mark. He captained Simba FC to the CAF Champions League final in 1972 and was part of the leadership that guided the Uganda Cranes to a historic AFCON silver medal in 1978—a high point in the nation’s football history.

As the country awaits official communication on funeral arrangements, tributes continue to pour in from fans, former players, and football administrators.

Uganda has lost a true football legend, but Polly Ouma’s legacy will live on for generations to come.

Rest well,Polly Ouma
