The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has confirmed the arrest of a Catholic priest from Masaka Diocese over alleged involvement in activities deemed subversive to the state.
In a statement issued on December 14, 2025, the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs said Rev. Fr. Deusdedit Ssekabira was picked up by security agencies to help with ongoing criminal investigations.
According to Col. Chris Magezi, the Acting Director of Defence Public Information, Fr. Ssekabira is being held in lawful custody as investigators look into the serious allegations against him. He added that the priest will be taken to court and charged once investigations are complete.
“The arrest is linked to ongoing criminal investigations into violent subversive activities against the state,” the statement said.
The UPDF did not give further details, saying the matter is still under investigation.
Earlier this month, reports emerged that Fr. Ssekabira was taken by people dressed in military uniform and driven away in a drone vehicle. At the time, the incident raised concern among the clergy and the public.
Fr. Ssekabira has been serving at Bumangi Parish in Kalangala District.
The arrest has triggered mixed reactions among believers and the wider public, with many demanding clarity from authorities. Security officials say more information will be released as investigations progress.
