UPDF Breaks Silence on Bobi Wine Arrest Fears

UPDF spokesperson Col Chris Magezi has dismissed claims by NUP leader Robert Kyagulanyi alias  obi Wine that there are plans to abduct him, branding the allegations a “smoke screen.”

Magezi said security agencies have no intention of arresting or abducting Kyagulanyi, stressing that action would only be taken if the law is broken. He added that security forces are simply monitoring the situation to maintain public order and prevent actions that could threaten peace.

The remarks come as political tensions rise, following Bobi Wine’s urgent social media post on Friday, in which he alleged that a “desperate regime” was planning to arrest him before polling day.

According to Kyagulanyi, the alleged plan is meant to justify mass arrests, abductions and heavy military deployment, similar to the November 2020 protests that left dozens dead after his arrest.

“I have learnt from security circles of a plot to have me arrested before polling day to create a pre-emptive massacre like November 2020,” Kyagulanyi claimed.

He further alleged that security agencies were planning to spark violence in Mbale City or nearby districts through a senior police officer he identified as Bravo, and that goons dressed in NUP colours would be used to portray the opposition as violent.

Despite the claims, Kyagulanyi urged his supporters to remain peaceful but firm.

Security officials, however, insist that the law will be applied equally to all citizens, regardless of political affiliation, and rejected suggestions of any plot against the opposition leader.
