Tension flared in Lwemiyaga after armed Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) soldiers reportedly blocked incumbent MP Theodore Sekikubo from holding scheduled campaign rallies in Bulongo Subcounty.
Sekikubo had lined up six rallies in Booma, Kinobi, Bigaaga, Kabeho, Kyembogo, and Kabukongoote. However, his campaign trail was abruptly interrupted at Ssuula Road Junction, about three kilometers from Kabukongoote, where soldiers stopped his convoy from proceeding.
According to accounts from the scene, one of the soldiers told Sekikubo’s team that they had been instructed to block his movements to avoid possible clashes with his rival, Gen. Emmanuel Rwashande.
The move sparked anger among Sekikubo’s supporters, who accused the soldiers of intimidation and acting with impunity. Some residents openly questioned the deployment, calling on NRM presidential candidate and president Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to step in and restrain senior UPDF officers they claim are overstepping their mandate.
After a tense standoff that lasted over an hour, the soldiers eventually allowed Sekikubo and his team to proceed with their planned campaign activities.
