Incumbent Makindye East MP and National Unity Platform (NUP) member Hon. Nyeko Derrick has publicly endorsed Hon. Medard Ssegona for re-election in Busiro East, throwing his support behind the seasoned legislator’s independent bid in a move that has stirred fresh debate within opposition ranks.
Nyeko’s endorsement comes just days after his party leadership and former NUP flag bearer Mathias Walukagga backed another independent contender, Magoola Emmanuel Matovu, for the same seat, highlighting growing divisions over who should carry the opposition banner in the constituency.
Posting on his X account (formerly Twitter), Nyeko described Ssegona as a principled leader and accomplished lawyer who has consistently stood firm on the rule of law and constitutionalism, particularly at a time when Uganda’s political climate remains tense.
Ssegona, a veteran parliamentarian, lost the NUP ticket to Mathias Walukagga in late 2025 but went on to declare his independent candidature in October. The race has since taken a dramatic turn after the Electoral Commission disqualified Walukagga, a development that significantly boosts Ssegona’s chances ahead of the January 2026 polls.
At recent rallies, Ssegona has been urging voters to reject short-term handouts and instead support accountable, issue-based leadership. His allies say the message is gaining traction across Busiro East as the campaign gathers momentum.
