Jailed But Still Fighting: Besigye Sends Campaign Cash to Bobi Wine Ahead of 2026 Elections

Renowned opposition stalwart Dr. Kizza Besigye has once again sent shockwaves through Uganda’s political landscape, this time from behind prison walls.

Despite his incarceration, the four-time presidential contender has reportedly instructed his wife, Winnie Byanyima, to deliver financial support to National Unity Platform (NUP) flag bearer Bobi Wine, boosting his 2026 presidential campaign in the final stretch of nationwide mobilization.

The move is being hailed by supporters as a daring act of solidarity in Uganda’s struggle for political change.

Speaking at a special prayer gathering for Besigye and other political prisoners which was held today in Kasangati , Byanyima revealed that her husband has been actively reaching out to his long-time allies and contacts from prison, urging them to channel resources toward strengthening Bobi Wine’s campaign.

She described the gesture as deeply selfless — a sign that Besigye’s dedication to the opposition cause remains unbroken, even under incarceration.

Byanyima noted that Besigye’s efforts have re-energized opposition supporters across the country, sending a powerful message that arrests and intimidation cannot silence the demand for change.

The development also rekindles memories of the 2021 election season, when Besigye and Bobi Wine stood shoulder to shoulder against President Museveni’s long-standing rule. Their renewed alignment now dismisses recent claims of divisions within the opposition, instead projecting unity at a critical political moment.

This comes as arrests and pressure on opposition figures intensify ahead of the January 2026 presidential elections. For many supporters, Besigye’s prison-driven mobilization is more than a symbolic act — it is a rallying call that the struggle continues, regardless of the chains.
