Post-Election Chaos: Bobi Wine Evades Arrest, Family Trapped in House Arrest

Uganda’s strong hold opposition party, the National Unity Platform (NUP), has issued a dramatic update to international media confirming that their party leader and presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu alias Bobi Wine escaped a security raid on his home during the tense 2026 presidential election period  but revealed that his family remains under house arrest.

In a statement circulated to global news outlets, NUP said security forces surrounded Bobi Wine’s residence in an apparent operation targeting the opposition leader. While he reportedly managed to evade capture, his family was left confined inside the home under heavy security presence.

The revelation comes after earlier NUP claims that Bobi Wine had been abducted by a military helicopter, reports that sparked worldwide concern and dominated international headlines. Ugandan authorities later dismissed the helicopter narrative as false, insisting no such aerial operation took place.

The confusion unfolded during a nationwide internet shutdown, which limited access to verified information and fueled speculation across social media and foreign press platforms.

All this played out as the Electoral Commission declared President Yoweri Museveni winner of the 2026 presidential election, extending his rule yet again. Bobi Wine and NUP have since rejected the results, alleging widespread electoral fraud and intimidation.

With political tension high, restricted communication channels, and opposition figures under pressure, Uganda’s post-election atmosphere remains volatile and closely watched both locally and internationally.
