UCC Restores Internet Nationwide After Election Shutdown

The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has officially restored full internet services across the country, bringing to an end the temporary blackout imposed during the recent general elections.

In a statement released Monday, UCC confirmed that all online services are now fully operational nationwide, saying restrictions were lifted after completing what it called “necessary technical and security assessments.”

The regulator also thanked Ugandans for their patience and cooperation during the period of limited access.

“We appreciate the understanding shown while internet access was restricted in the interest of national security,” the statement read.

Uganda plunged into an internet blackout shortly before the January 15, 2026 general elections, a move authorities said was intended to curb the spread of misinformation and prevent potential security threats.

UCC Executive Director Nyombi Thembo defended the shutdown, stating that the measure was taken to safeguard national stability during the highly charged electoral period.

The internet disruption coincided with elections that saw President Yoweri Museveni declared winner with 71.65% of the vote, securing a seventh term in office. His main challenger, Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine), garnered 24.72% according to official results.

The opposition has since disputed the outcome, alleging widespread irregularities.

With restrictions now lifted, social media platforms, messaging apps, and web services have resumed normal operation across Uganda.

UCC says it will continue to monitor digital spaces to ensure responsible online communication.
