Bright Muhumuza, the National Unity Platform (NUP) coordinator for the Ankole sub-region, has resurfaced after weeks of uncertainty and was on Wednesday produced before the Mbarara Chief Magistrate’s Court under tight security provided by the Special Forces Command (SFC).
Muhumuza, who contested for the Mbarara City South parliamentary seat on the NUP ticket in the recent elections, had been missing since January 14, 2026, sparking anxiety among his supporters and party officials. He reportedly vanished while distributing appointment letters and facilitation to party agents.
His sudden reappearance in state custody ahead of his court appearance has raised fresh questions surrounding the circumstances of his disappearance.
According to the charge sheet presented in court, Muhumuza is accused of driving a motor vehicle with registration number UAY in a rash and negligent manner, allegedly endangering the life of SP Kenneth Kabwigo Gumisiriza, the Mbarara City Division District Police Commander (DPC).

Muhumuza was arraigned before Grade One Magistrate Ochieng Yafesi, who remanded him until February 11, 2026. The court is expected to hear his bail application at 9:00 a.m. on that date.
The case has drawn public attention, with opposition supporters closely monitoring developments amid ongoing concerns over the treatment of political actors during and after the election period.
