Kampala, Uganda — Democratic Front (DF) president, Hon. Mathias Mpuuga has sharply criticized the National Unity Platform (NUP), accusing the party of prioritizing “noise” over meaningful electoral reforms.
Mpuuga argued that adopting a proportional representation system would have spared the country a costly by-election in Kalangala District.
According to him, such a system would have allowed NUP to directly nominate a replacement following the death of Kalangala Woman MP Hellen Nakimuli, instead of triggering a fresh vote.
The former Nyendo-Mukungwe MP, who parted ways with NUP after a public fallout with party leader Bobi Wine, went on to dismiss speculation linking him to a potential ministerial appointment under President Yoweri Museveni.

He emphasized that his current focus remains on building and consolidating the Democratic Front, a party he launched in 2025.
Nakimuli’s death in April 2026, following surgery, has reignited political tensions and exposed fractures within Uganda’s opposition. Mpuuga’s remarks have since drawn backlash from NUP supporters, many of whom are questioning both his intentions and his political relevance.
