Uganda Launches Smart Electric Bus Revolution in Kampala

Uganda has taken a decisive leap toward sustainable urban mobility with the official launch of E-Bus Xpress electric buses in Kampala on May 3, 2026.

The unveiling is happening today at the National Science Week Uganda 2026, held at Kololo Independence Grounds, spotlighting the country’s accelerating investment in green innovation.

At the heart of the rollout is the locally manufactured Kayoola EVS, a flagship electric bus built to redefine public transport. Designed for efficiency and comfort, the buses will run on scheduled city routes and feature modern amenities such as cashless payment systems and free onboard WiFi, offering commuters a smarter, more seamless travel experience.

Operated by a subsidiary of Kiira Motors Corporation, E-Bus Xpress marks a major expansion of Uganda’s homegrown electric mobility solutions, extending from Jinja to the Greater Kampala metropolitan area. The initiative aims to deliver zero-emission transport while reducing congestion and improving air quality in one of East Africa’s fastest-growing cities.

This rollout aligns with Uganda’s broader development strategy, reinforcing the #MadeInUganda and #STIWorksUg campaigns highlighted during National Science Week. By prioritizing local manufacturing and clean technology, the government is positioning innovation as a key driver of economic transformation, with ambitions toward a $500 billion economy.

As Kampala embraces electric public transport, the E-Bus Xpress project signals a clear shift toward a cleaner, more connected future where sustainability and economic growth advance side by side
