The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of ICT, Aminah Zawedde, has dismissed circulating reports claiming the government plans to shut down the internet, mobile money, and banking services ahead of next week’s General Election.
The claims were linked to an alleged notice from the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), which has since been debunked.
Zawedde clarified that no such order has been issued and urged the public to avoid spreading misinformation that could create unnecessary fear.
She also issued a stern warning that live broadcasting or online streaming of riots and violent events is strictly prohibited, stressing that such content can spark panic and insecurity among citizens.
Highlighting the government’s commitment to information access, Zawedde reminded citizens that past blackouts have cost the economy $109 million and attracted global criticism.
The Ministry called on Ugandans to stay calm and focus on peaceful participation in the electoral process, while opposition leaders continue to prepare backups amid heightened tensions.
