Uganda’s Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa, has taken a swipe at the National Unity Platform (NUP) following its decision to replace seasoned legislator Medard Sseggona with little-known politician and singer Mathias Walukagga as the party’s flagbearer for Busiro East in the 2026 elections how was later disqualified from the race over acedamic qualifications
Speaking at a charged NRM rally over the weekend , Tayebwa sarcastically remarked that Sseggona appears better suited for heavyweight government roles such as Attorney General, while NUP’s deputy leader Mathias Mpuuga could even fit the position of Prime Minister.
His comments were widely interpreted as a jab at NUP’s internal choices, suggesting the party prioritizes blind loyalty over experience and competence, and lacks a clear vision for governance.
The remarks have sparked heated reactions across the political divide. NRM supporters have echoed Tayebwa’s mockery, ridiculing NUP’s decision as evidence of disorganization within the opposition party.
Meanwhile, NUP defenders have fired back, accusing the ruling party of hypocrisy by pointing to similar internal replacements within NRM including the transition from Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda to Robinah Nabbanja as Prime Minister arguing that leadership reshuffles are common across all parties.
As the 2026 election season heats up, Tayebwa’s comments have added fresh fuel to Uganda’s already intense political rivalry
