NIRA Suspends National ID Services Ahead of 2026 Polls, Sub-County Registration Halted Starting Tomorrow

The National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) has announced an immediate suspension of National ID distribution and registration services at sub-county level, effective tomorrow.

According to an official update from NIRA, all registration equipment currently deployed at sub-counties will be withdrawn and returned to NIRA offices. In addition, NIRA offices across the country will remain closed on January 14, 15, and 16.

Clare Ollama, a NIRA registrar, explained that the decision is aimed at ensuring Ugandans are able to fully exercise their civic rights and participate freely in the forthcoming general elections without administrative disruptions.

The move comes as election preparations enter a critical phase, signaling NIRA’s effort to streamline processes ahead of voting days.
