Joel Ssenyonyi: Over 300 NUP Supporters Arrested as Regime ‘Panics’ Ahead of 2025 Polls

Joel Ssenyonyi, the Leader of Opposition and strong hold opposition party NUP spokesperson says security forces have arrested and detained more than 300 supporters and officials from Bobi Wine’s campaign since the January presidential campaigns kicked off.

Speaking to Reuters on Tuesday, Ssenyonyi said the regime is “in panic” and using arrests to intimidate supporters of NUP presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi A.K.A Bobi Wine , who is challenging President Yoweri Museveni for a second time.

Ssenyonyi noted that the detained include ordinary supporters, campaign coordinators, and Bobi Wine’s aides with several arrests happening this week in Kampala where campaigns began on Monday.

At rallies in Kawempe and Mukono, security fired tear gas and used water cannons to disperse crowds, while videos on NTV Uganda and Bobi Wine’s X account showed police pepper-spraying and beating some supporters.

According to Ssenyonyi, over 100 people were arrested on Monday, and more were detained on Tuesday in Kampala outskirts. Police, however, said they arrested only seven people for allegedly pelting stones and injuring officers.
