Kampala, Uganda — Democratic Front (DF) president Mathias Mpuuga has launched a bold legal challenge against the January 2026 general elections, petitioning the Constitutional Court over what he describes as widespread irregularities that undermined the integrity of the vote.
He made this revelation earlier today during press conference held at party’s head offices.
Mpuuga revealed that the party’s petition is anchored on nine key grounds, including alleged military interference in the electoral process, failures of biometric voter verification machines, and poor demarcation of polling stations by the Electoral Commission.
The outgoing Nyendo-Mukungwe MP, whose party failed to secure any parliamentary seats in the elections, said the move is not about political loss but about defending democratic principles. He argued that the issues raised point to systemic flaws that ultimately influenced the outcome that returned President Yoweri Museveni to power.
According to Mpuuga, the petition seeks to hold electoral authorities accountable and push for reforms to ensure future elections meet constitutional standards.
The legal action comes months after the Democratic Front opted not to field a presidential candidate, a decision that raised eyebrows at the time and now feeds into broader opposition concerns over the credibility and fairness of Uganda’s electoral process.
Mpuuga’s court challenge adds to mounting scrutiny from opposition actors who continue to question the transparency, management, and credibility of elections in Uganda, particularly citing the role of state institutions and electoral infrastructure.
The Constitutional Court is now expected to review the petition, a process that could reignite national debate over electoral reforms and governance ahead of future polls.
