Police Warn: Misuse of National Flag Is a Crime

The Uganda Police Force has warned the public against the misuse of the national flag, stressing that lack of knowledge of the law will not excuse offenders.

Speaking during a security briefing at Police Headquarters in Naguru, Police spokesperson Rusoke Kituuma said authorities have noted increasing cases of flag misuse, especially during political activities. He cited incidents where the national flag has been hung on electric poles and other places without authorisation.

Kituuma reminded Ugandans that the National Flag and Armorial Ensigns Act clearly regulates how the flag should be used. Under the law, anyone intending to use the national flag must first seek permission from the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs.

He further explained that the Act strictly prohibits the use of the national flag or armorial ensigns for business, trade, professional or commercial purposes without approval. The law also bars any use that may mislead the public into thinking such activity is officially endorsed by the government.

Calling on citizens to familiarise themselves with the law, Kituuma urged the public to treat the national flag with dignity and respect.

“Respect for the national flag is respect for the country,” he said.
