An international storm is brewing over Uganda’s post-election crisis after renowned human rights lawyer Robert Amsterdam released a powerful open letter demanding that Ugandan authorities guarantee the safety of opposition leader Bobi Wine and his family.
The letter follows the disputed January 15, 2026 presidential election, in which President Yoweri Museveni was declared winner of a seventh term amid widespread allegations of electoral fraud.
Amsterdam strongly condemned reports that military forces are surrounding Bobi Wine’s residence, calling the move a clear act of intimidation and retaliation against the opposition leader.
He cited the recent violent raid on Wine’s home, during which his wife, Barbara (Barbie) Kyagulanyi, was assaulted, as evidence that the situation has escalated into a dangerous phase.
“The continued military presence around Mr. Kyagulanyi’s home represents a direct threat to his safety and that of his family,” the letter warns.
Muhoozi’s Threats Raise Global Alarm
The letter also references public threats issued by Uganda’s military chief Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, describing them as reckless statements that place Bobi Wine’s life at risk.
Amsterdam warned that if any harm comes to Wine or his family, international legal action and targeted sanctions will follow against individuals found responsible.
The intervention by a high-profile international lawyer signals growing global concern over Uganda’s political climate following the election.
Opposition groups continue to reject the official results, while security forces maintain heavy deployment in areas linked to the National Unity Platform (NUP).
Amsterdam’s message is clear:
Guarantee Bobi Wine’s safety or face international consequences.
