Police in Kawempe have detained Elizabeth Aluku, director of Spotless Kindergarten and daycare, over allegations of negligence following a tragic incident that claimed the life of a 4-year-old pupil.
According to the Kampala metropolitan Police spokesperson, SP Kawala Racheal , the incident occurred on April 10 at the school located in Kawanda-Kivulu, Wakiso District.
The child reportedly fell into a saucepan containing hot tea, sustaining severe burns to the lower part of his body.
Despite receiving medical attention, the young boy succumbed to his injuries five days later, on April 15, at Kiruddu National Referral Hospital.
A police briefing, accompanied by video evidence, pointed to a lack of proper supervision at the time of the incident.
Authorities revealed that teachers had left the classroom unattended, creating conditions that led to the fatal accident.
Police have since issued a strong warning to schools and caregivers, emphasizing the need for stricter safety measures. They urged institutions to ensure constant supervision of children, secure cooking areas away from classrooms and also avoid bringing hot substances, such as tea, into spaces accessible to young learners.
Investigations into the matter are ongoing as authorities seek accountability and reinforce child safety standards in educational institutions.
