U.S. Warns of Curfews, Internet Blackouts And Travel Disruptions in Tanzania

The U.S. Embassy in Tanzania has issued a fresh security alert, warning American citizens to brace for possible unrest as nationwide anti-government protests are expected to kick off on December 9, with activity potentially starting as early as December 5.

The alert follows recent chaos after Tanzania’s October 29 elections, where parts of the country experienced violence, destruction of property, internet shutdowns, and major travel delays.

According to the embassy, travelers should prepare for serious disruptions in the coming days, including:

Possible nationwide curfews

Internet blackouts

Suspension of ferries to Zanzibar

International flight cancellations

Roadblocks and strict movement controls

The advisory also notes increased scrutiny from Tanzanian security forces, especially toward foreigners. Authorities have reportedly been checking electronic devices for political material linked to unrest. The public is also reminded that sharing videos or images that may incite panic is a criminal offense under local law.
