UCC Issues Firm Warning: Only Electoral Commission Allowed to Declare Election Results

The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has issued a strong directive to all broadcasters and users of communication platforms across the country, warning against the premature or unauthorised declaration of election results.

In a statement released today under its mandate as provided by Sections 5(1), 32, 45 and 49 of the Uganda Communications Act Cap 103, as well as the Uganda Communications (Content) Regulations 2019, UCC emphasized that the Electoral Commission (EC) remains the only legally mandated authority allowed to tally, declare and officially announce election results in Uganda.

UCC cautioned that any form of declaring, projecting, publishing, or circulating election results from polling stations or other unauthorised sources is strictly prohibited.

The directive applies to all television stations, radio broadcasters, online data service providers, and individual users on digital and social media platforms.

According to the Commission, the move is aimed at protecting the public from misinformation, confusion, and potential unrest that may arise from the spread of unverified or premature election results.

“All broadcasters and users of online communication platforms are reminded to fully comply with this directive,” UCC warned, adding that any violations will attract penalties as provided by law.

The directive comes as Uganda prepares for key electoral processes, with authorities urging the public and media houses to exercise responsibility, patience, and professionalism as official results are awaited from the Electoral Commission.
