Uganda Government Reinstates Trade Order Enforcement Amid Mixed Reactions

The Ugandan government has officially resumed the enforcement of the nationwide trade order following Cabinet approval on April 27, 2026, reversing last week’s suspension that had been issued by Trade Minister, Hon. David Bahati to allow further consultations.

Minister of Local Government, Hon. Raphael Magezi, announced the development during a press briefing at the Uganda Media Centre, confirming that the directive is back in force with immediate effect.

The enforcement campaign is aimed at restoring order in urban areas by removing illegal roadside kiosks, containers, and informal vendor structures operating within road reserves across towns and cities.

However, the move has sparked divided public opinion. Supporters argue that the crackdown will improve sanitation, urban planning, and the overall appearance of cities. On the other hand, critics warn that the enforcement threatens the livelihoods of many small-scale traders who depend on these informal setups to survive.

Concerns have also been raised about inconsistency in government policy, with some questioning the abrupt reversal of last week’s suspension by Trade Minister David Bahati.

As implementation begins, attention now turns to how authorities will balance urban order with economic survival for thousands of affected traders.
