Uganda’s Parliament held a special sitting on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, to honor Hon. Hellen Nakimuli, the Kalangala District Woman MP who died at age 41 on Sunday, April 19, 2026, following an unsuccessful surgical procedure at a medical facility in Kampala.
The sitting, marked by emotion and tributes across party lines, quickly shifted into calls for accountability. Hon. Theodore Ssekikubo, MP for Lwemiyaga County and a member of the ruling NRM, urged a full investigation into the circumstances of her death, noting that a postmortem had already been carried out.
Speaker Anita Among supported the proposal, assuring lawmakers that Parliament would follow the matter to its conclusion.
In a statement, Alexandra Medical Centre where the surgery was conducted expressed condolences to Nakimuli’s family, colleagues, and constituents in the National Unity Platform, describing her death as a profound loss. The facility reaffirmed its commitment to ethical medical practice and professional standards, adding that the attending doctor is supporting the bereaved family during this period.

The statement, signed by CEO Dr. Castro Kisuule, also highlighted the institution’s medical credentials to emphasize its professionalism.
Lawmakers across political divides paid tribute to Nakimuli, remembering her as a strong voice for fishing communities and infrastructure development in Uganda’s island districts.
According to the Speaker’s Chambers, a week-long mourning period is underway, with burial scheduled for Thursday, April 23, 2026, in Luweero District.
