UPDF Hits Kampala Streets Ahead of Elections, Issues Warning to Political Actors

The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces
(UPDF) has kicked off patrols across Kampala in what authorities say is a proactive move to tighten security ahead of the upcoming general elections.

In a statement released by Acting UPDF spokesperson Col Chris Magezi on his X (formerly Twitter) , the army assured the public that there is “no cause for alarm,” describing the deployment as a routine operation meant to guarantee public safety.

However, the UPDF made it clear that the patrols are also a response to rising political tensions and threatening rhetoric from some political actors and their supporters.

“We do not take threats of violence during the election period lightly,” Col Magezi stated.

The army noted that the operation is being carried out jointly with the Uganda Police Force, with the goal of ensuring citizens feel safe as the country heads into the heated campaign season. The joint security teams will focus on protecting both public and private property while maintaining law and order.

The UPDF ended its statement with a stern warning that any acts of criminality or threats to public order will be handled swiftly in accordance with Uganda’s laws.
